blogs.smugmug.com — There's a huge, gaping hole in Apple's lineup between the iMac/Mac mini and the Mac Pro. Most of the market, both home and work, buy something in between, but Apple still doesn't offer it. They missed their chance, again, yesterday. We don't want to buy Dells - bring back the Mac!

You just described the target market for the Imac. What do they want with a tower case and PCIe slots? Is it Dad Thughead that wants expandability that he'll never use? Is that what you mean? Is it Jane Soccermom that wants to buy the latest $600 nvidia video card to play Crysis? Is that the market you're referring to?

I wish I could make a comment my #1 story... my thoughts exactly!

Part of the point is that if I buy a 24" iMac now, when I come to upgrade the computer in however many years, the (perfectly good screen) has to be disposed of and repurchased. Even if you sell the thing, you're still having to pay full price again for a component you already own. It didn't put me off buying one but it will make me think that little bit more before committing to an upgrade. If I could buy a "Mac", upgrade it then replace it but keep what parts are still good, I'd probably upgrade more often. My powerbook lasted me for 3 years before I finally committed to an iMac, I'd probably want to upgrade every 2 years but I just can't justify it.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Blah blah blah blah. I heard the same s**t about the X1600 when the MBPs came out. Guess what? It was all bullcrap. My MBP handles games just fine at high resolutions. The only compromise I have to make in some cases is to either choose low fullscreen antilaiasing or a lower res but all other settings are turned up.Drivers, motherboard layout and that Macs do not have a video bios on their gfx card can all have an effect on performance.

My take: if you buy an iMac and then change it you don't "throw away the monitor". You change it too.If you need more than 24" of display and can afford it then you can afford a MacPro.If you need to play games you don't need a Mac. You need a console or a PC. Nothing wrong with buying one of the two instead of a Mac.If you need a computer then you need a Mac. And the iMac is an excellent bargain.

They can install a cracked OSX, but the cracked OSX is flaky at best. Video is a BIG problem, for one thing.

Schelske can't read. The requirements are to KEEP the existing 24 inch monitor. Did you hear that Schelske? The 24 inch monitor must remain in the picture! You didn't read the requirements.

Schelske. WTF? The guy said that the monitor had to stay in the picture and you didn't get it.... lamo.
