online.wsj.com— As owners of the Apple iPhone recently learned, it rarely pays to be the first to buy into a hot new technology. But how long should you wait?

I know this is not gadgets. For DVDs and software, I usually get them on the first release week due to sales like at Fry's Electronics, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. Even better with pricematching. Retail software is rarely updated anyways, and you still need to get the patches.
Aye. What self-respecting geek pays out the ass for untried, unsupported, socially conspicuous technology? These 'geeks' you seem to speak for are masters of aging hardware, and recognize that paying out the ass for another .2 GHz when the money could be better spent on high frequency RAM - or hell, a pizza and a 6-pack - will do nothing but stoke your ego.Who YOU seem to be referring to are over-the-top gamers, who are normally able to afford these luxuries because (a) it's a very important part of their mature adult life or (b) because they're 15 and live at home and can spend their entire paycheck on silicon snobbery so that their forum sigs look more impressive.
Most of the geeks I know still have a P-3 or 2 running as mail clients or doc servers. Just because you play games or know how to rip a dvd does not make you an automatic geek. As another example just because you own a Ferrari you are not necessarily a gear head.
I was one of the people who bought early and I too will not be doing that again. I knew all of the risks I just wanted it and for that I get what I get.All in all I love my iPhone.

If they just came out, hold off. Let the bugs be found.
