when the fraternal order of police introduced these weapons, there was fear that cops would abuse them. they promised the public that these weapons would be a non-leathal substitute to real weapons.ie: in the instance where a gun would be acceptable, these non-leathal weapons could be used instead.would it have been ok to shoot the 'don't tase me bro' guy with a handgun? no.how many stories can you find on Digg where some lazy cop has tasered a child, an unarmed woman, old people, etc...? these weapons are abused by law enforcement officers & the public is doing nothing.

This site seems pretty similar to cracked.com.... not that's there's any thing wrong with that.

Are we to understand that prior to the introduction of tasers, there were police out there who would indeed think to use a GUN on children, the elderly, pregnant women, etc?

Didn't see a 16 year old with a broken back. You all maybe think that I was referring to the 4 situations in the article? Those people could have avoided being tased if they simply complied.

What most people don't realized is in order to subdue someone without a taser you have to basically hold them down. If you're close enough to do so they can very easily grab your gun and now you're f**ked!

So, you're saying that, prior to tasers becoming popular, it was common for officers to have their guns taken by subjects they were attempting to subdue? It seems like preventing that from happening would be one of the primary purposes of officer training, and I really haven't heard of many cases of that.

@nosecohn, here's the 2nd hit on googlehttp://www.gothamgazette.com/article/crime/2004091 ...It's easier said than done. Officer training only covers some basic techniques that are simply taken from hand book. The problem with that is, the counter to those techniques are on the very next page.
