It's pretty absurd how often the term has been misused by the mainstream media in the last couple of years. What's most appalling is that oftentimes they use the term capitalism to describe corporatism or blatant anti-competitive practices. Oh well, it's the NY Times - hopefully they'll go bankrupt and disappear soon enough.

this is what is going to happen to weed industry.
Step 1: Legalize medical maryJ
Step 2: tax and regulate the s**t out of medical mj
Step 3: Eventually, sometime in the future, legalize mj for recreational purposes.
Step 4: Tax and regulate the s**t out of mj in general, leading to prices of mj being HIGHER than before legalization.

Legalise it and tax the Hell out of pharmaceutical corporations that destroy the environment by paving over plants and contaminating aquifers. A weed dependent upon growing seasons can't possibly have the capital an indoor lab would.
