washingtonexaminer.com — The controversy over President Obama's speech to the nation's schoolchildren will likely be over shortly after Obama speaks today at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. But when President George H.W. Bush delivered a similar speech on October 1, 1991, from Alice Deal Junior High School

There's nothing wrong with any president addressing school children as long as they don't use the opportunity to further a political agenda. Two elements come into play - the actual content of the speech and the timing of the speech. If the speech comes close to or falls within a campaigning period, then it better be damned important. Obama isn't the first to address school students and neither was Bush. I don't see a problem with either of their speeches. To think otherwise in these two situations means that the president can't give speeches on an aircraft carrier either. There was a time when a national speech by a president was shown live in public schools without any apprehension. There's really only one person - the president, no matter who that is - who can speak to kids at schools across the nation, gain their voluntary attention, make a claim that anyone can achieve success in this country, and state that anyone who sets their mind toward success and achievement could become president. If the president uses the opportunity to advance their political agenda, then the president should be admonished for doing so. This is something Reagan did by explaining the theory of trickle-down economics in such a speech after a question by a student. Was the question about his economic policy staged? Was the response already in the can? I don't know, but it didn't belong in an address to students.

You're in complete denial. The quote clearly implies that what made the speech wrong was that it politically promoted Bush:"The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president"How could you read that and try to downplay the similarity between this criticism and the type levied by Republicans?---That is a quote from one person--Yes, the Democrat House Majority Leader, who kind of represents the Democratic party's position.

If I don't agree with the president's agenda does that make me a bad person?

Bush was apparently supposed to fly into the air himself and stop the planes, like Superman.

"Anyone with a shred of objectivity understands that Reagan led America out of the economic malaise of the Carter administration, enacting policies that created millions of jobs and completely turned the economy around."When Pres. Reagan took office, unemployment was 7.5%. This number held steady or climbed for the next 22 months, hitting 10.8% in Nov. and Dec. 1982. It then started going down slowly and reliably such that in Sept. 1984 it went under the end-of-Carter unemployment numbers to stay. Taking 3.75 years to lead America out doesn't sound like something any objective observer could label as "completely turning the economy around."You're one of the many people who have criticized Pres. Obama for the unemployment numbers we have right now. Don't be so dishonest as to say that Pres. Reagan lead America out of the economic malaise of Pres. Carter when he took almost a full term to do so and then criticize Pres. Obama for not fixing the Pres. Bush economic implosion in 8 months.Oh, and by the way - unemployment under Pres. Carter after his inauguration was lower for all but the last 4-6 months than what it was when he took office. I know it's popular to blame Pres. Carter for economic problems in the late 70s, but if one uses unemployment numbers as one of the measures, it just doesn't hold up.

Hey Minarchian,Those who followed Hitler did fine, it was those that opposed who got the train rides. Just saying, that those who go along to get along will have nothing to fear, and most likely turn ya in because that's what good leader wants. ;-)
