I just finished reading the book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion and according to the author, the laugh tracks have been found to make viewers laugh more. According to him, we're more likely to laugh if others are laughing. It's a "social proof" thing. Even if the joke isn't all that funny, we're more likely to laugh if we see other people are laughing. I bet most people hate the laugh tracks, but hey, it works.
