engadget.com — See, whilst you may have spent the last few days loading up [in your Apple TV] your collection of TV shows and movies from the last 18 months, the rest of the world has had to settle for "home movies, music, and photos", as quoted from the Apple TV's UK Apple Store product page.

Rather than typing my usees for the AppleTV, I hope it isn't too bad of thing to point you to my blog. If it is, let me know:<a class="user" href="http://www.zerologic.com/site/page/pg4759-as308-pn_Why_AppleTV.html">http://www.zerologic.com/site/page/pg4759-as308-pn_Why_AppleTV.html</a>The summary is that I'm not using it for TV or Movies... but rather video podcasts. I've essentially created my own TV station (audio too) for $300. It just doesn't matter to me that iTunes content is 640 X 480.

It's popular among HDTV owners who use iTunes to share libraries on their networks, which make up a small portion of the population... makes things a bit complicated... As for the overpriced content, I doubt any of the geekier people buying this thing will touch the iTunes Store with a 10-foot pole. This will be for standard format music and videos ripped from optical discs or downloaded from the net, along with free video podcasts.

Even worse: when movies and TV shows first came out on iTunes, there were Apple commercials mentioning it on Canadian TV, despite the fact that they were not, and still aren't, available to Canadians. At least that stopped after...a month?

because it is shiny and has an apple on it. What more could you ask for? That is true innovation.

Toast-It is essentially a $300 mac. It can run all sorts of applications and play any type of video file. That isn't its intended use, but it can be use in many ways. It's already running SSH, apache, firefox, VLC, etc. Not bad for a $300, silent, slim box. Do some googling, people are hacking this thing right now. Right now it's pretty much opened up except nobody has figured out how to get the USB ports working.

@DebbilsAdvocate Meh. Certainly depends on what you want to do doesn't it? For instance, without doing s**t else, I can organize all my song albums and DVD rips through iTunes and stream them to an Apple TV within 5 minutes after getting it home. Whether you respect it or not, getting that going on an XBMC takes some doing... no really... (unless you're a fan of digging up this mod or that mod for retrieving album art or what have you), and the interface doesn't function half as nicely (though props to Team Black Bolt). For folks who already use iTunes, Apple TV is more than the quickest, easiest, cleanest bet. For people that like screwing around with stuff and don't mind spending a lot of time on dated hardware, I'm sure XBMC will continue to hold an enduring fascination. --Just... don't fault people for keeping it REAL.

Maybe not the best place for it, but has anyone figured out what /private/var/db/.AppleCustomMac is for? The name caught my attention, but it's just an empty file ... but obviously exists for a reason?

Good. I've never paid so much attention to this before.
