gizmodo.com — We just got the scoop from Microsoft on Windows Mobile 7 and Windows Mobile 8, the two upcoming platforms that will fix what is undeniably broken about the Windows Mobile platform to date. Turns out, Microsoft knows exactly what's wrong with the WM platform, and it knows what to do to fix it. Trust me: there's hope on the horizon.

Win XP seems pretty darned good to me. If MS would just abandon their Windows Genuine dis-Advantage program, they would still have a fighting chance of being popular again.

This isn't a new trend. They've been doing that pretty much since they were founded. Promising great features so that people hold off on buying a competing product, then not delivering said features... this is one of their standard tactics. They did the same thing with DOS years ago.

Well I just bought (about a month ago) a Sprint Mogul and am *very* happy with it.BUT, you do gotta get some plugins! SPB Plus and/or SPB Pocket Shell both add a LOT to the interface. The 2nd makes the screen into 10 big buttons much like the iphone. The first allows you to create 6 "groups" of icons that have whatever you want in them, and they have plugins for quick contacts, weather, etc.I am upset GPS isn't enabled yet on the phone and wont be until a 1st quarter update, not sure how you have GPS in a phone and release it disabled. I've also had to update my rom, which has helped memory and performance a LOT.I love the fact I can RDP into my desktop, SSH (putty) into a server, play mame/gameboy/nes games on it, use it as a modem with my computer (and its quite fast with evdo). I've got Age of Empire, Heroes of Might and Magic, and even UFO X-Com mobile versions on it. It syncs with exchange, yahoo, my desktop(s), and hotmail all at the same time. I've got an IM client, plus a full keyboard if I need faster typing. I can use the wireless network at home, and when synching to my PC I actually see and can use the phone screen on my pc screen. I even have a rss reader on the main screen showing the latest digg headlines ;) I can play any format of music and dont have to download my songs from some crappy website. I can just copy MP3s, WMVs, etc onto it and they play. I've even found apps that convert a DVD into a 250mb or so you can watch it on the phone. I can use a 4GB SD-Card and replace it while the OS is running, it saves me from carrying a memory stick. I use it as a webcam too. I can use IR to sync or function as a universal remote. I'm sure there is more I'm forgetting ;) It basically does *everything*, and performance is "ok".... Now, for the bad:- You have *got* to get 3rd party addons.... many good ones out there make the minimize button actually close apps, thus negating those memory issues outta the box.- The original interface does leave much to be desired, but with the 2 SPB packages the interface is kick ass, and with sliding plugins its nearly identical to an iphone.- You have to open they keyboard by default for the view to change from portrait to landscape, though you can have this in a button.- The battery life SUCKS, if you do constant syncs and have bluetooth enabled your lucky to get 6 hours.... but if you just keep it charged when at your desk/in your car your fine.- I bought a 2GB SD card for like $35, yet its only got 48mb of ram, and half that avaliable... WTF!!!! Put in a 256mb ram and internal 4gb sd card, jack up the price $50, and performance would rock.- In my opinion, its a crappy phone, but a GREAT ultra portable computer. I'm not a big phone user and have 1-2 blackberrys for work so I'm fine with that.- Software is harder to find than for java devices, and I'm still not sure what to look for. Is WM5 ok? is it a smartphone, pocketpc, or smartphone 2003? Pro or standard WM6? Half the time I download something I'm not even sure it works!- 3rd party vendors charge WAY too much for portable apps, on the par as desktop apps! This when the coding for a phone is REALLY easy in comparison. Freaking rip off, glad I can pirate software for it ;)- The default graphics API (GDI) is pretty crappy, so you need a 3rd party addon to make cool games :)- Sprint doesn't allow "phone as a modem" functionality, and you gotta one time $20 3rd party product to enable it :(I think windows mobile is for "power users" who like to screw with their technology. Its not real great outta the box (much like windows) but with all the addons and expansion capability, you can do whatever you can possibly desire with it. If I wanted to make my WM6 *exactly* like an iPhone, I could, and I'm sure somebody soon will.I do love my blackberry though, and would prefer to type on its keyboard (I could just not be used to the mobile 2 handed keyboard yet though). Its also much simpler to use, but it is much simpler of a product so thats kinda asumed. If you have a mogul and aren't happy with it, here are some steps to increase your happiness much like I did:- Update latest firmware from http://www.america.htc.com/support/mogul/software- ... This speeds up the mogul, clears some ram, and adds some new features.- When you do your update, and it clears the internal storage, when the phone is comming up it says "installing sprint software in 3..2...1.." reset the phone right then, and no more sprint software!- Download SPB Mobile Shell and/or SPB Pocket Plus (both at spbsoftwarehouse.com and cost some money). I suggest the 2nd one unless you want an iphone type interface the first provides. Both are configurable. SPB insight is a great RSS reader too.- Download the task manager, which not only closes apps but allows you to see which ones are running any given time and close them out, it also shows available ram: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-htc-t ...- Get mameCE3, Pocket Heroes, Pocket UFO, GNUBoyCE, and PocketSNES for some fun- I suggest Pocket Controller Pro at http://www.soti.net/default.asp?Cmd=Products&SubCm ... though its just because I like having a phone interface on my desktop so I dont need to constantly monitor the phone. It also gives things like a regeditor and file explorer.Granted, you have to pay $100 or so on top of the phone to get the additional benefits, and when thats on top of a $300 phone its not very welcome, but windows mobile 6 is a daned good OS for a PDA, but prolly a crappy one if all you want is a phone (in which case why the hell did you buy a $300 mogul?!?!?!)

So, they're finally going to fix my alarm clock so it doesn't go off when it's disabled?
