arstechnica.com — Besides being in charge of his toolset, Russinovich will be working with the Windows Vista performance team. He'll be both analyzing and addressing performance issues in the new OS. Without taking any credit away from Vista's team, it's reassuring to know that Russinovich is looking at ways to enhance Vista's overall performance...

Hey, you guys don't know this dude do you? I'd think the Linux crowd would be all over this guys bushel of manure. Russinovich tears Linux a new one in his Linux vs. Windows kernel comparison classes at Tech-Ed and other MS events. He's brutal. He teaches a long list of Linux limitations in comparison to Windows, shows how NT had features in the early 90's that Linux has only recently implemented, and explains why Linux can't compete on enterprise-class workloads.About half of his utilities implement like two Windows API's on a command line and you can find most of those in the PSDK. He's been developing his big "Process Explorer" for like a dozen years and people are somehow amazed when it has another neat to little tab or tick box.Holy crap, all his tools should defy gravity and slice bread for as long as he's been working on them.

I use autoruns and their rootkit detector, but I use Taskinfo as a task manager. It's not free, but it's got more features.http://www.iarsn.com/taskinfo.htmlAlso take a look at DiamondCS Port Explorerhttp://www.diamondcs.com.au/

I used to work at MS Platform Performance support and Russinovich's book "Windows Internals" (written with David Solomon) is required reading. Chapter 7 on Memory Management is absolutely essential and I recommend it for any Sys Admin out there. This book really turned me onto how much of a great wealth of knowledge Russinovich is. The guys working Perf all speak increadibly highly of him and respect his opinons. I think Vista will be well served by his presence.

I'm just happy that the tools i've come to love are going to be around still.Shortly after the purchase of sysinternals, I was unable to download any files, getting random 404's, and figured it was just microsoft taking it all apart for scrap.Whew, it's still all available, but who knows if new tools will show?
