wisegeek.com — some geek took a bunch of pictures of 200 calories of all kinds of different foods... its pretty surprising to see that a small spoonful of peanut butter has the same number of calories as an entire plate of broccoli.

@AbatrourI assume you're getting American Smarties confused with the candy-coated chocolate candy sold outside of the United States by Nestl?.Not everyone on Digg is American, I know, but the person who posted these pictures apparantly is.

But isn't the point of this wonderfully clear? And isn't the method disarmingly straightforward? Some foods have fewer calories per weight. They will probably fill you up more. You can eat more of them.Maybe Gummy Bears and cheeseburgers and bacon are not the right choices if you'd like to weigh less.People always try to make out that losing weight is so terribly complicated. Is it really? Isn't it as simple as these pictures?

You should be more careful about what you say. People might actually believe what you say.

Thanks folks. That helps!I was struggling with the "unit of measure" notion. With a calorie being a unit of measure, saying something had 500 calories never really registered with me. It was like saying, I'm going to take my car to the gas station and get 300 miles. I'm buying gas, which gets me 300 miles. Anyway, you get the idea. Thanks again

I'm Canadian born and you'd be amazed at the number of chocolate products Americans miss out on - starting with the real Smarties (when you eat your smarties do you eat the red ones last, do you suck them very slowly or crunch them very fast? Eat them any way you want to but tell me when I ask, when you eat your smarties do you eat the red ones last?)Oh! Henry bars are awesome, Coffee Crisp is amazing and Crunchie bars are so delicious - between Nestle and Cadbury, Americans truly miss out.

It would be a little more convenient if the EUROPEAN who posted this would have included measurements in ENGLISH and not in THAT FOREIGN LANGUAGE THEY SPEAK IN EUROPE CALLED METRICS!

If I had a nickel for every time I read someone claiming that people get fat because they eat fat, I'd have enough for a lifetime membership at Weight Watchers. Meanwhile, in high school honors biology I learned that the human body operates on a *glucose* metabolism primarily, NOT on a fat metabolism; when Dr. Atkins came along and explained how glucose metabolisms and fat metabolisms work, I was completely not surprised. Although this would seem counterintuitive to anyone who's never bothered doing the research, most people get fat from eating too much starch and sugar, NOT from eating too much fat; as long as you've got adequate carbohydrate in your diet, your body will NOT use fat for fuel. Even when it does, it only turns perhaps ten percent of fat calories into glucose for fuel, so the chances of dietary fat turning into body fat are--pardon the pun--very slim indeed. It is true that people eating excessively high-carbohydrate diets will also eat more fat for several reasons, which is why diets high in fat are so often linked with heart disease; the truth is that researchers are ONLY looking at the fat intake and don't particularly care about glucose for the most part. Some are beginning to wise up, but not nearly quickly enough for people like my parents who both went through the stages of insulin resistance and obesity and are now Type II diabetic. Meanwhile, I kid you not, you can go into a *hospital* and look at the waiting room vending machines and the signs will tell you that a pack of sugary candy is healthier for you than a pack of cheese and whole-wheat crackers. Why? The candies have no fat. It's madness, I tell you.Dr. Atkins was right. The people who dismissed him as a wacko never bothered reading any of his books. I wonder how many more people are going to have to die of degenerative disease before we stop counting calories and start looking at the quality of what we eat, because it matters a hell of a lot more to get enough vegetables in your diet than it does whether you are eating too much fat. "Everybody knows"... not nearly enough.

That's a butt-load of carrots and celery! More than enough for 3-4 meals. Of course, the portions for much of the other foods was significantly less (muffin, chilli)

FYI research tip: Smarties were introduced by Rountree (now Nestlé) in 1937; M&Ms were introduced in 1941.Now, what DO Smarties look like and what DOES M&Ms look like? :)

Hooved animals get far more than 200 calories out of that amount of celery because they can digest the cellulose.

In amongst all these blogs going back over about a year there are some posts from Americans. They ask questions like ''what is a gram - I'm an American''. Another asks ''why do you use these measurements - why not use American ones?'' Well the answer is pretty simple folks - the good hole USA is NOT the centre of universe (note the spelling of centre!!!!!) There is a whole world out there beyond your 'sea to shining sea' and for the most part, this world at best tolerates Americans and at worst can't wait to destroy you. I am not advocating that, just stating the reality. In cafes and pubs here in Prague where I live, many Americans approach me and ask me why the world hates Americans. Even that question in itself is naive because it implies that we CARE. The reality is, on a day to day basis America is an irrelevance to us here in Europe. I asked 4 classes at my high school which of the fast food 'restaurants' (ha ha ha - restaurant for God's sake) they had eaten in during the previous month. Not ONE of them had been to a fast food restaurant this year, let alone this month. But these stores are usually full of people so I went to have a look. They are full of fat Americans and Brits. Not a lot of Czechs in there. So in answer to Americans who complain that the rest of the world has a non-American culture that includes grams, kilos, A4 paper, chips not fries, and our own music, films and fashions I say 'get off your bums (NOT butts!) which are undoubtedly fat, and go and see some of the world outside your own country. You MIGHT just learn something!
