Its not just that they hire the best people for the job, they also take care of them the best once they are part of the group. No other company takes care of its employees like google does. THAT is crucial.

Most of the breakthroughs that Google has put out recently have been through companies they acquired.

Google is very actively trying to prevent the averaging down effect. They apparently have, I kid you not, a hiring algorithm designed to prevent such things. I'm told managers do not do any hiring, there's a central hiring team that says 'here's your new employee'.

I thought this article was going to be some sort of break down what they all do ([Fake] Example: 500 work in food service; 200 on core search, 200 in Gmail, 100 in China, etc.)

But, how do you know? There's a lot of mis-information. Some googlers I talk to think more than 1 interview is rare, others thing that more than 2 is the norm.
