A more interesting fact about diamonds is that they are all (very) slowly turning into graphite, which is a more thermodynamically stable form of carbon. The process does take thousands of years though.
As a single male digg participant, I must ask where all of the "I don't care about diamond rings" women are in the real world that seem to post here? I haven't found any, and my friends haven't found any. Seems to me no woman cares, so why are we still buying the rocks for them?A big diamond is the perfect way for a woman to one-up a friend. That's why their men buy them.
Take for example this "fact""Sure De Beers won?t buy diamonds coming out of Cote d?lvoire, but they?ll turn a blind eye to the smuggling of diamonds from there through Ghana and Mali where they are certified as being conflict-free."Tell me, why would De Beers turn a blind eye to people illegally distributing products that directly compete with them? It would be to their benefit to stop the smuggling, if it is happening.
@ahawksDe Beers has no mines in Ivory Coast. When the diamonds appear in Ghana and Mali, who will purchase the diamonds? Maybe a company that at one point had a 80% market share of the world's diamonds. Since the diamonds are classified as conflict-free, De Beers gets no bad publicity from purchasing them. Its not competition if you are the end buyer, it just deflects the blame.

This article needs some clarification!!!> It’s just marketing.Heck yeah!!! Marketing is needed to sell anything. After all a diamond is just an expensive rock. A Diamond is Forever was actually taken from the old Bond movie.> Diamonds aren’t rare. There are thousands of carats of diamonds mined every day. 70% of them are not gem quality. They are actually used in a lot of equipment like dentist drills, the drills for cutting tar roads, burrowing and a million other scientific tools and equipments. The gem quality diamonds are not that significantly rare. Its the distribution line which is tightly controlled by the Big Daddy! De Beers used to have an 80% market share. Not anymore!!! It has diminished to 55% in the last decade and it's shrinking dramatically. One of the biggest reason why it opened flagship stores. It's still considered a monopoly!!> Diamonds have no resale value. This is absolutely wrong. Everything has a resale value. A pink and lime colored 1987 buick has a resale value. Diamonds have a resale value NOT INVESTMENT VALUE. Any jeweler who says that diamonds are investments is lying out of their teeth.> Synthetic diamonds will flood the market. They have been around since 1957. Seems more like a drought not a flood. Once again, they are used for industrial purposes.> Moissanite looks just like a diamond. In smaller sizes a moissanite looks very close to a diamond. In larger sizes, they get expensive and are available in yellowish to yellowish green colors. Moissanites are machine made/man made, it takes the same effort to make a .01 carat moissanite and a 1.00 carat moissanite. Explain to me why does the 1.00 carat not cost the same as 0.01 carat.> The Kimberley Process is just PR.It's a self monitored process and has its limitations. The K process has served well in reducing the number of diamonds exported illegitimately. Just like you cannot stop all the crime in the world, you cannot get 100% results.> Children in India are cutting and polishing the diamonds. That report does not subtract the number of children who are working in their family business because they want. I know since I am from India, worked and am working in the diamond industry and a lot of my friends starting training when they were 12 yrs old.> Children in conflict zones are being used as soldiers. It's a sad thing but how is that the diamond industry's fault???

But that is the kind of stuff that happens with diamonds. It's not very clumsy as far as propaganda is concerned-in fact it's a damn good movie.
