He's an artist. Artists should do beautiful mock-ups (or icons) and programmers should realize them. Of course, it always takes some time till mock-ups become reality. That's open-source, you can follow every step from an idea to some mock-ups, and from mock-ups to actual code.
You're missing the point. These mockups make people think this is what KDE 4.3 is becoming. People made the same mistake with the plasma mockups. Take the extender-mockup for example. That animated gif image has been on the plasma site for 1.5 years. Now, 2.5 years later, the "promised" extender still isn't a part of plasma. Yes, there are extenders, no, it's nothing like the mockup. The problem with these mockups is that people look at 'm like designs for the developers to work with, but that is not true. So, my problem isn't with the mockups themselfs, it's the illusion of a promise of delivering the mockups for real. This decentralised working is bad for KDE, bad for open source and bad for the linux desktop. I think gnome is doing a great job here. While Gnome 3 is being designed right now, not a single blogpost out there posts a mockup which wasn't heavily discussed and approved by getting positive input from a majority on the mailinglists. And even then, the mockups are realistic and do not surpass the skills of developers.Work together on a single project, do not inject brainfarts. That is wrong.--And for your info: The top-dock on the mockup in this story isn't a normal dock, it's a plasma-settings-panel, which no is in the right upper corner. That is a major difference with a standard panel. The OS-X like dock ISN'T going to be the standard option. Hinting disabled ISN'T going to be the KDE default. The task-based dock ISN'T going to be in KDE 4.3. Not now, not ever. The task based approach was a fundamental difference which was heavily discussed and aggreed upon until Aaron Seigo himself decided that KDE 4.0 could be released without the task based approach. Well, if that is how you think about software.....
Yes, Kopete's auto-reconnect sucks, but connect status is simple: Are the account icons animated? If so, it's attempting to connect.Pidgin isn't perfect either. I switched from it because I was sick of frequent crashes and and tired of GIMP-like random UI changes with each new version.

People get too excited about a theme.

So use a different window manager theme. They still have all the classics like KDE 2, Plastik, and Redmond and DeKorator has been ported to KWin 4.x.
