I get them ~ once a month, though lately not that often i think because i quit eating before bed (especially milk).Mine is always on the left side of my vision, always looks like a candy cane with the stripes flashing and moving a bit. It isn't all that colorful and you can barely see it, but you can't see anything from that part of your vision at the time either.I haven't ever gotten the real headache after, it usually stops there and goes away.
It could have been a migraine. My visual migraines usually include a loss of peripheral vision similar to what you describe. I have to ask though, this didn't prompt you to go to the doctor at some point?

Certain foods are triggers...smoking the odd joint helps, but not the cheap stuff...but the food triggers are bad.
