If you look at google's HTML source, no doctype, everything on the same line (almost), styling in tags... but it's still used by millions of ppl and it works. :)
According to the W3C spec, the opening XML tag is optional when the document is served as text/html, and, in most cases, it will be omitted because it triggers quirks mode in IE 6.
Dreamweaver is the first app i've used to make pages in 10 years. Until now I have been using TextPad just to avoid all the froo froo b.s. that 'web editors' seem to include.
