I find black/white combos harder to read than any other dark/light color combination. I find it needs to be a fairly high contrast, but not as high a contrast as black and white offers. The white background with black on white kills my eyes after an hour or so, and white on black plays tricks on my eyes. I end up seeing bright spots every time I adjust the position of my eyes.
