In the long term companies are going to pull out of China because of the low wages and the bad press that they get because of it. We are fast approaching the point where any repetitive task that doesn't involve creativity can be accomplished more cheaply with robots and expert systems than with people.

Imagine that... people living without Google and an iPad, and they don't care!?Seriously... from talking with Chinese living in China, I really believe that Google pulling out of there is not as big a deal as some Americans like to think it is.

I would believe this if it Google wasn't a still a first generation company. But Google is a young company and the owners of that company have a strong dedication to better peoples lives. So I really do think they are pulling out to "do the right thing". The western PR is another thing too. There is also the possibility that it just ain't worth going through all the damn hoops, even if the money is good.

What is not to understand? If your companies only compete in a protected space (china) you will not be competitive in the global marketplace where you have to compete at a much higher level.

@Pisfister. Double check your number, google has $300 million USD revenue in China while Baidu has $650 million in 2009. Consider Google enter the market in 2006, thats call ass kicking. also, google has only 1/2 the headcount as baidu because all the R&D is already paid for back in mountainview, CA. so google is very profitable in China.shame on you, Pisfister. You will go down in history as those yellow rat traitors that oppressed its own people for personal gain. instead of using your skill and knowledge to help liberate the follow Chinese enjoy the freedom that you enjoy, you act all bad ass defending the censorship of a corrupt government that controls information to stay in power. those censorship law were not passed by the people but by elite few to keep the billions in check so they can continue to defile the land given by ancestors and whore out the labor of the people for a cheap dollar. these measures are to keep an incompetent regime in place. consider how well taiwan, hk, and sigapore has done without a communists china should tell you that any defense of this horrible regime is a betray to your family's honor. there is no pride in you.
