net-security.org— Altough this problem was found out more than a year ago, new users that are buying iPhones and migrating to AT&T/Cingular should know that their voicemails can be listened to by anyone.

Setting up a password through the visual VM on the iPhone as you must do the first time DOES NOT fix this. You must call your phone number and change the password on the other side. I had to set a password, disable it, and re enable it for my VM to be protected. You can test this really quick by calling your phone number. If you don't get prompted for a password, then nobody else will (who may be spoofing your caller id) either!
The article does indeed say that this is not limited to iPhone users. However, since there's now a large number of new AT&T users because of the iPhone, it's certainly news for them. It should have been fixed a long time ago.
