technewsworld.com — Warner Bros. has filed a patent application for a single disc that can store regular DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray content. "Multiple formats of DVD discs create retail and consumer confusion as to which format(s) to acquire or buy," the firm's patent document stated.

Hmm... first WB goes all "forward-thinking" w/that YouTube deal and now they're saying 3 formats is confusing and want to fix that with a hybrid disc. There's gotta be some evil s**t behind all of this. No WAY is any company THAT consumer-friendly in this day and age.;)

They're not user friendly, this is a hugely profitable business decision, and it just so happens that it might help the consumer.

Well, I guess if you can't get Toshiba and Sony to play nice together you can force them to play nice together...

It wouldn't matter what type of DVD player you had because the disc would work in all of them. I for one don't care enough about video quality to upgrade to HD. So this means that I won't be forced to upgrade. I know eventually I will because VHS is not around anymore, but at least this way, it might be a few years before I have to make the switch....... by then we should know which is truly the best and most popular.

I predict a merger of formats and a new BluDVD emerging. Either that or a bloody war with body parts strewn apart afterwards.

But if you could make it a burnable disc instead of a stamped disc, and then a recorder capable of writing all of the formats, it becomes a new format having a capacity that is the sum total of all three capacities.

How is this patent 'non-obvious'?
