The problem I've seen with any flourescent lamps (including CFL's), they turn everything YELLOW or into sick colors. This includes carpeting, furniture, plastics, etc.The UV rays are constantly bombarding everything. The better answer would be brighter LED based lamps. They would use low power as well. But so far I haven't seen any good ones yet.

Most florescents can't work on a dimmer switch! Bad things(tm) may happen. A minority on the market can be used with a dimmer.

You'd be amazed at the cheap crap that's hiding behind all that "luxury" - chipboard behind the "Scandinavian Maple" veneer - the lousiest pvc the contracter could get behind the expensive bathroom fixtures - and yeah, cheap T12 flourescent tubes with Mexican magnetic ballasts in the kitchen.CFLs are next-generation technology. They relate to the crap someone stuck in your kitchen ceiling in much the same way a modern BMW relates to a '58 Ford. Yes they're both cars, but the experience is very different.Of course someone who's only driven a '58 Ford would naturally be an expert on the driving experience of the 2006 Beemer.Listen to the Beemer drivers, amigo - those problems you have with your old Ford? We've been converting to using these bulbs in our home. Love the fact that they are not as hot as the regular bulbs.

No thanks. I prefer traditional bulbs with soft lighting. I don't care for these ultra-white bulbs. They look like crap.Plus, a lightbulb is cheap. Pennies a month to operate. As long as I'm willing to pay for the energy they use, who the f**k cares?

White LEDs are not as efficient as CF. But I do agree, in places where I need truly instant on, I'll be using LED bulbs as soon as they are affordable.

Kinda late to be adding my $0.02 but, for the last few days, the grocery store (Albertson's) near my house has had stacks of 3-packs for $1 per pack sitting in front of the store. 14/60 and 26/100 watts. They're from Lights of America with a tag that says "The price includes a discount courtesy of SoCal Edison". At $0.3333333/bulb, I'm not going to be too picky about color temperatures and spectral output.
