roughlydrafted.com — Daniel Eran does another smart epic covering WWDC & Leopard, deconstructing some of the dumber ideas floating around. A good comparison of Leopard & Tiger, Apple & Microsoft, Spotlight vs WinFS, Time Machine vs. Shadow Copy, and Vista 32/64 vs. Apple's new Quad Universal Binaries... @ RoughlyDrafted Magazine

Thurrott is sometimes an odd character. He used to make money by being a Dvorak junior. He would post asshat trolls in order to get the Mac community to flock to his articles, pitchforks and torches in hand. Not all of his comments were completely off-base, but plenty were, and his tone was intended to provoke.I doubt he's actually like this in person (and he's not in his email replies to queries), but something weird happened a couple of years back. He started adopting a less hostile tone about Apple. I have no idea why, but it did work. I became a regular reader of his columns, and enjoyed most of them. However, he does have the occasional relapse, and it has been more common recently. But here's hoping for the "good" Paul to come back. And this article is on the ball about the Time Machine business. Trying to compare it to Volume Shadow Copy is ridiculous.

I agree. I don't think any of Apple's banners said "we invented widgets". I think the point is execution. However, there are many things Apple hasn't executed on (gaming, printing) but certainly the C:\windows list is longer. The myths will continue forever until everyone uses a Mac.- Two button mouse myth: **wrong**, MS USB mice work- Viruses aren't on Mac because of market share, no one writes viruses for such a small market share: **wrong** 5% market share should command 5% of the viruses- Windows can do everything Mac can do: **wrong** Combine soundcards in XP, try it. Setup an ssh tunnel without 3rd party software. Make a symlink. Run both XP and OSX with bootcamp.

"For the record. I've been a Mac user for over 10 years, and an OS X user since 10.0. No Mac I have owned has ever corrupted a single file I have created on it, and I have had one kernel panic (on 10.0) in total."Did you just choose to completely ignore his comment about 3rd party drivers? Microsoft makes an OS, that's it. They don't build the machines. If a driver for the machine crashes and takes your work with it, is that really the fault of MS?As far as the comment about time machine, has anyone heard any word on how much space this backup takes? They were talking about using an external drive, that kind of worries me.

"Viruses aren't on Mac because of market share, no one writes viruses for such a small market share: **wrong** 5% market share should command 5% of the viruses"Er, wrong. Viruses and other malware rely on network effects, and you're ignoring Metcalfe's law.

"And no, popular usage has not redefined the word Acronym."Really... it has. The word "initialism" is so seldomly used, even among those who know it, that acronym has all but overtaken it.

I would like to see Bob Cringely do a part 2 special of "Triumph of the Nerds: How the Personal Computer Changed the World" that would focus on the Windows and Mac operating systems. The devolopement strategies, failures and accomplishments of both Microsoft and Apple are a geeks soap-opera dream. If you haven't seen "Triumph of the Nerds: How the Personal Computer Changed the World" get a copy and watch it.

Wow the MSFT fanboys are out in force today. What do you MSFT fanboys have to say about the Quad-Universal Binaries?http://innerexception.blogspot.com/2006/08/leopard-preview-revisted-64-bit-and.htmlMSFT has to ship separate versions of XP to support X86 and X86-64 while Apple will ship one version of the OS. In addition, applications (Apple and third-party) can target all four architectures with one binary.

"Its true that Microsoft will often bring a technolgy out first. " Well Please, enlighten us. What "Technology" did Microsoft innovate? Please feel free to actually specify things rather than make pronouncements. I also know the history of Micro computers and Microsoft's innovation is not a part of it. So please just name the times that MS "will often bring a technolgy out first"

The above comment has been marked as inaccurate. Much much better than "Paul's article."Just an assh**e with a comment...move along.

I'll take that bet. But rather than anti articles from Paul. How about some accurate ones?
