engadget.com — We have information from an anonymous tipster claiming that Sprint is set to take the wraps of their new WiMAX brand dubbed XOHM. It's anybody's guess at this point how you'd pronounce that ("x-ohm" or "zohm" perhaps) but we're told to expect a formal announcement as early as Thursday.

Ah, WiMAX.Useless for me until a blackberry uses it... which won't happen for another five years. Damnit, I love RIM's phones but I hate the lack of proper 3G, let alone WiMAX.

I like that name, actually.

I know someone who works at Sprint, and it's pronounced zome like home or foam.

i don't get it. please elaborate on the name's significance.and quite frankly, i'd much rather have municipal wi-fi so we can start establishing ubiquitous wi-fi coverage that's not controlled by the telecoms. widespread adoption of municipal wi-fi would be a huge technological boon to our society. it could open the door for all sorts of new wireless devices, like a wi-fi internet radio receiver, or VoIP cellphones, or other wireless internet appliances. we wouldn't even need to rely on the telecoms closed cellular network monopolies and submit to their price gouging if municipal wi-fi became standard infrastructure the way we have telephone liens and highway systems, etc.this is a step in the right direction, but i think municipal wifi is a big enough of a necessity that it should be our ultimate goal. i mean, look at how f**ked up our cellular networks are--do we really want the telecoms to manage a nationwide WiMax network? just look at the difference between how the internet developed as an open public network compared to the closed cellular networks that lock out third-party developers and non-carrier-approved devices.

too bad iPods don't have wifi capabilities. but maybe this'll be useful for Zune and PSP owners. this is also good news for internet radio companies that want to develop portable wireless devices--i'd love to be able to listen to my last.fm statons on the go. internet radio > xm radio/serius > fm radio.
