The first blow (or poison, if you would) was when CBS discovered that they could make money off the news-- that's how it all started, with 60 Minutes.Granted, that's one of the better news shows out there, as they didn't go full hog as CNN and Fox do on a regular basis. That's because 60 Minutes wasn't created on the premise of making money from reporting the news.
