osx86project.org — Although fully functional on developer releases of OS X for Intel, the WINE compatibility layer, which allows Windows programs to run on *nix systems including OS X, was not available for the public release of 10.4.4. However, thanks to the hard work of the folks at Darwine and their contributors, it appears this barrier has been broken!

f.y.i. there have been digg posts on this before....right. Leading straight to the developers site. Working versions have been out for a while, nothing new,

"I would appreciate it if interested Digg users could link to sites or blogs that make both regular and impressive use of Darwine. Not just opening Notepad or something."I would be interested in knowing why you dont think that opening notepad on osx isnt impressive

It'd probably be a better solution than installing Windows on the Mactel machines. Most of the time there're really only one or two windows applications that I really need to use. No point rebooting for them.

"I would be interested in knowing why you dont think that opening notepad on osx isnt impressive."Because notepad sucks?
barbobotFeb 8, 2006
"Because notepad sucks?"yes very good, i am stunned by your argument. please leave me in awe again. really, why would you down a whole project just because they happened to run notepad. personally i think its pretty cool to take system calls from one os and convert them to another os with such little overhead.

This statement is completely inaccurate and uninformed in virtually every conceivable way :)How so? The kernel is based on BSD, which is licensed in such a way that it can be copied and nothing contributed back. Does Apple make their kernel open source somewhere, because I was always under the impression that they didn't?Even so, their track record with projects like KHTML has been less than impressive, with the KDE community having to nag them endlessly for a changelog (I know, that's vastly oversimplified, but it's pretty much what happened). I think Apple is still learning to get along with Open Source, at least as a contributor.

"Is anyone working on OSXine? i.e. run Mac programs within Windows?"I'm sure that will get you crucified by some people..Anyway, has anyone tried games..?I wonder, assuming it'd work (I doubt it though), if Root Kit (or Rootkit?) Revelear works..- Ben

Now... How long will it be before we see the much promised CrossOver Office for Intel Mac (promised by CrossOver last year) and Cedega (no promises yet, but some polling in the transgaming forums)? It is the beginning of the end... The MS gaming monopoly is almost over in PC land (unless everyone starts using only XBoxes, hehehe). The app monopoly is now about to collapse...
