I'm not a fan of sidebars but I love docks. I don't know what the big fuss about 'stealing' features from each others operating systems is all about. Heck, I encourage it! If the feature is good.. Then why ignore it? Make your operating system the best it can be. Coming up with original ideas are great, but going with what works and working on something else more important is better.
Right, when GNU/Linux apps copy from Windows/OS X guys like you moan that they shouldn't do it, that it is annoying. When they *don't* copy then you moan that it looks and behaves like a program from 90s. Geez, make up your mind already. If you don't like it then don't use it.
Over half the mockups you see amount to nothing more than pure wankery, impossible to realize without extensive reworking of both the GTK+ toolkit and applications sprung from it. This is serious work, and well beyond the means of any one distribution. You're better off wishing for GTK/GNOME 3.0. Copying OS X, Windows == for shame. While you may not like it, at least KDE4 has created its own style.
I fix that just by setting the background colour to white, and then dropping the opacity to about half way down.It works with most backgrounds I've used.
