"I understand that we shouldn't expect the government to solve all our problems for us, but I doubt we should expect volunteers to solve our problems either."If you're expecting someone else to solve your problems, you've got it all backwards. The point of this article is that these people stopped expecting anything from anyone, and did it themselves.
Interesting. Now who stands behind the work and who gets sued if an accident happens due to shoddy workmanship? Who would have paid the bill if one of these workers had been hurt on the job? All things to consider, especially since there is a bridge involved.
It can get WAY worse than it is today. Rationing medical care, central government bureaucrats making decisions on who and who won't get care. Inferior care. Long, long waiting lists. I could go on and on.
We have been taught that everything would fall apart without the almighty government in every aspects of our lives. Didn't these people learn that lesson?
The health care issue disproves BOTH your points.@rkthoadan: Medicare provided health care in the United States is among the worst in the industrialized world, but still spends MORE per head of coverage than France, which has the best health care in the world.@Cputerace: I agree with most of government services, however, most of Europe has proven that certain things (like, for instance, health care) can be handled much better in a nationalized system than a privatized one. We have a s**tty government here in the USA, but government in and of itself is not always a bad thing.
What Rush wants is simple. One bus for morbidly obese, ultra far right, drug addicts and one for the the rest of society. I think the Rush Bus with be a short bus.
Considering they did it for "free" (let's estimate $10,000 in raw materials), that means you could have 400 bridges (or in this case, repair jobs). If each lasts 2 years, that's 800 years worth of bridges. You think $4,000,000 worth of repairs are going to last 800 years? The simplest solutions are almost always the best solutions.

I agree on your basic point, but New Orleans might not be the greatest example...
