techcrunch.com — Voicemail is dead. Please tell everyone so they’ll stop using it. When I first started out in the real world in the mid-nineties voicemail was an important productivity tool. But now an increasing number of people are just plain avoiding voicemail. It takes much longer to listen to a message than read it.

A guy I dated always left me a voicemail whenever I missed his calls, and it was always something along the lines of, "Hey baby, just give me a call back when you have a chance to." I couldn't decide whether it was thoughtful and cute or just straight up weird and a waste of time.

While voicemail isn't all that popular among my circles, what really bothers me is when people ring and you miss it or are too busy to answer, then they immediately ring another 5 times in a row. And it's never anything important.

EUREKA! If VM systems could be 'modernized,' aka no s**t we know what to do when the beep happens- i dont need to hear from a slow computer voice that 'after the beep i can leave my message, press 5 to page the person, then when i am done leaving the message i can press star or simply hang-up the telephone, then 5 second wait, then I can leave my message. I can hang up the phone and send a txt before i would have gotten through that computer message. VM should say 'this is xx, leave a msg - BEEP' And the VM checking system, why do I have to go through so many menus just to hear a msg? Outdated, except for super complicated msgs or for old people who cannot figure out txting.

Companies need to make their voice mail systems send out messages as e-mail attachements. It's a simple solution on voip systems which bridges the two technologies as well and allows for personal archiving. The only problem is you do need to dump that old analog PBX first.

Do you not have computers? You can sent a text with any web browser with an internet connection.

I had an Aunt that did that, but she has passed away. Now I miss her calls.

iPhone pretty much got rid of all the crap you're complaining about. But I agree, I wish they would slim down non-iPhone VM systems. The ones that really piss me off is when I'm actually trying to leave a VM, and it says "Press 1 to page this person, to leave a voicemail, please stay on the line, and press # for more options." Just play their outgoing message and freaking beep for me.

I hate that the most. Saying "call me back" without telling me what you need me to call you about. It's like, I had this dumb-ass friend in high school (back when pagers were "in") would always page people with 911911911 after the number. You call him back and he's like, "what's up, what're you doin?"

it's a narrow perspective - half of society are the older and elderly who don't have text messaging, so what about them. the article focuses only on gen-y people, and applies to convienience amongst that generation, but excludes basically the rest of society - and what about the disabled or blind?
