kqix.com — An ambitious fan game, in development since 2000 and nearing completion has been shut down by Vivendi Universal Games (a.k.a Sierra Entertainment). King's Quest IX was to be an alternative ending to the popular King's Quest series. Some project stats: 40+ volunteer staff, 2000+ page script, 9 chapters, 450 characters, theme songs...

Why is Vivendi shutting this down now? They've known about the project for years, and not shown any interest one way or another until now, as the game nears completion. How can Vivendi hope to benefit by doing this, especially now? The people who were making KQIX were not paid, nor was the game to be sold. So money can't be an issue. Stopping KQIX now gains absolutely nothing for Vivendi, and takes away something significant from the many who were a part of this game, from artists to programmers, voice-actors to fans. If Vivendi shut this game down because they plan to make a sequel, they should realize a free game by fans, for fans, is hardly a threat to their marketing machine...if anything, the publicity and fanbase associated with KQIX will enhance any new material Vivendi might put forth in this vein. Why is it large companies take the adversarial approach off the bat, rather than try a little communication and teamwork? Much more might be accomplished by working together; nobody's toes would get stepped on; the fans would be happy; games would be played; everyone wins. I like that a lot better than watching big corporations squash enthusiastic fan projects for no apparent reason.

I understand all of the legalities involved, they're protecting their material and what not. But it's just a huge slap in the face to the actual fans who are putting countless hours into this project. It's like meeting your favorite band and all the members are assh**es, it's gotta hurt.

Yes they should continue development, do the renaming, release it and tell vivendi to kiss their arse.Though I really don't care, I'll never ever buy anything from vivendi from now on. Maybe if they lose enough customers and are brought to the brink of bankruptcy they just might realize how dumb such a move was.

Hey Guys. Keep pounding out the negative letters to VU. I am an animator for KQIX and I think this game really has to be released! It was a crushing blow for the whole team but we are not giving up yet. I've played the demo for chapter 1 and I've worked on the intro and other parts of the game. It is totally amazing! Just look at the trailer posted before. Thanks for the support and keep the letters rolling! Thanks again.

This move by vivendi is outrageous and I am disgusted. I furthermore refuse to purchase another vivendi product in the future and do sincerely hope that the filthy executives burn in hell for their hate crimes.
