I have installed Ubuntu Dapper with XGL+Compiz on my AXP2000 with 512MB RAM equipped with a GF2MX 32MB. No slowdowns here. And that's on a 3-4 year old machine.
"I am much more concerned with the possibility of my data being lost, corrupted by viruses, accessed by unknown people, that sort of thing."Yes, since all of that is handled by your window manager. If you're worried about these things, you should certainly be using windows./sarcasm
And that is ATIs fault, and their fault only. Dont blame linux because assh**es act like that messed up dude in LOTR screaming "my precious" when it comes to their sourcecode
Now why would Microsoft be worried about that? I don't get it. Sure, it's a snazzy looking desktop, but since when did a desktop make anyone extremely more productive? Never.Show me some features that will make my computing more productive over time than what I already have. This video shows nothing like that. In fact, I'd be just as productive running Windows 3.1 or Mac OS 8.
Uh, what? I'm not a Microsoft Fanboy, infact my comment actually said I didn't want any of the rubbish they're doingAnd I also didn't say anything bad about Linux..I don't want animated jiggery-pokery and I don't want transparency, therefore I hate Linux and am an idiot?Yeah, it's not me who sounds like the irrational fanboy here
No, he's right, it does look a little unpolished still. I'm sure the code and technology is top notch, though. The effects are very cool to watch, and I'm excited to see more, but they should be refined and we need to find good use-cases for them. Apple's genie effect is a good example of eye-candy like this that found its place.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the; "It's useless" comments I'm seeing.... If Apple released this, it would have been dugg 4000 times by now, and the fanboys would be running around exclaiming they rule the world. You people know it's true...My buddy forced me to sit through his make the page peel demo on his Mac...NOW that's f**king useless...At least the pointless s**t in XGL has some f**king flair. Mac-a-boys, give us all a f**king break. Take a vacation from your head-up-the-ass comments.
I like XGL and I like the OSX interface as well, but the one thing I like on Vista is flip 3-d. I like that I can shuffle through my many open windows with a decent sized preview of the contents. I am one of those people who leaves many open apps though too...

Parallels will be supporting hardware 3D on the next release, but it might be pushing it to expect this to work. Good luck though.
