blogs.zdnet.com — "We expect to do more to make Windows more differentiated when it's genuine, and so genuine customers get a truly different experience than non-genuine customers. Some premium features built into the Windows Vista operating system will require genuine validation." - Microsoft.

WGA for XP was phase one in Microsoft's DRM for Windows...Testing the waters, as it were. The sheep balked, but not too much...Now for phase two...

this shouldn't be surprising to anybody. why would they patch XP with it, and then leave it out of their fancy new OS? that wouldn't make any sense.

Battlefield 2 and MMORPGs were never completely cracked. If you're tied to a server, you're going to need a legitimate key or account. If you can get updates without MS, you could just block the server and crack the WGA. I don't doubt Vista will be cracked, but some things really can't be cracked. Otherwise, show me how to get a free WoW account! :p

"As much as we bitch about windows, I would be interested to do a scan on all posts to see which ones were coming from windows boxes."Actually, no, more software is being made for Linux than ever before. I think the OS X market will start expanding too, now that Apple is making Mactels.

If you think that paying a periodic fee for Windows is outrageous, you're behind the times! My company pays high five figure annual license payments for our EDA software - per license! And if we don't renew at the end of the year, our databases are pretty much nothing more than bits on a hard drive. And if you think that Windows has bugs, you'd be astonished at what you get for $50,000 a year. It's robbery, plain and simple. Microsoft is just a piker compared to what passes for quality and value in the EDA business, but the vendor field is even more limited there than in the OS arena. So I just can't get too worked up over WGA or activation or DRM - I deal with FlexLM, memory leaks, inexplicable software crashes and technical support whose agenda is 180 degrees out of whack with mine - all to the tune of a total of half a million dollars a year.

I wonder how long it'll be before Vista PCs start shipping with "Palladium Project" chips.http://www.akamarketing.com/palladium-project.html:'(

i would like a windows-lite. with things like messenger and all the other stuff i would never use stripped out to hopefully increase performance. i think they will be releasing a crippled version, but no doubt messenger will take a degree to move.

At least they are smart enough to realize there will be loads of "non-wga" people and that they dont seem to care, as they shouldn't because there is not really anything they can do about it. They are taking the best action by giving more to the wga people the only way you can thest days with live over-the-net validation.

i had a look at the official xp-lite, and as expected they are making it practically unusable, rather than stripping out all their junk
