They could send the thief to "virtual jail" and the people that spent that kind of money on "virtual furniture" could be sent to a real mental institution.
The article does not make clear what the crime is - stealing virtual furniture or stealing real passwords to gain unauthorized access. The latter seems more likely. I think you need to take possession for theft to occur, and you can not posses virtual furniture if it is residing on the service host's machine.
