dailykos.com — This is a horrific crime, and while I don't promote the kind of overdone sensationalism- evidenced on CNN and Fox News, this man's death should draw some notice. It should serve as a warning, at the very least. Whether Hall was or wasn't gay isn't the point. The fact that the teenagers used this as their defense... speaks volumes.

Let me get this straight (no pun intended). This IS a story because it is NOT a story? In 2005 there were 16,692 murders (over 45 per day). Just because everyone on the internet didn't hear about each and everyone of them we are all supposed to throw our hands up in protest and blame the press? If the estimates are true and 1 out of 10 people are gay...that means 4.5 gay people were murdered everyday in 2005. I can't read that much news.

@nexusActually, it is the perpetrator that is treated differently and the perp isn't treated that way because of their race, but because of the motive of their crime. It is no different than upping the penalty due to other motives.

1. I heard about this story on the news when it happened2. It has been mentioned multiple times on this topic3. It was brutal and the perps should never be allowed freedom4. There is no evidence it was a "hate crime"5. Once again: hate crime != crime committed against person of another race

"Violent Hate Crime In Indiana...Why No Coverage"From the article description; "...this man's death should draw some notice. It should serve as a warning, at the very least. Whether Hall was or wasn't gay isn't the point. The fact that the teenagers used this as their defense... speaks volumes..."Griffin7 said; "...I would think this would get coverage as well. It certainly is worthy of coverage....."-FBI statistics show that in the U.S.,14,860 murders were committed in 2005.-In defense of the mainstream media, who I cannot stand due to their biased nature, with 14,860 murders committed in 2005, there simply isn't enough time in a day for the national news to pick up a murder story and to report on it. The odds of a murder story getting reported on regionally or locally are much better. For the national news to pick up a murder story, there must be a sensational element to it. Such as, a black retired football player turned actor accused of killing his wife by almost removing her head, or a former child actor shooting his wife outside a restaurant, or a record producer shooting his girl, or an eccentric loner who ate the remains of his victims. Simpson, Blake, and Specter gained notoriety and their victims became well known due to the celebrity status of the murderers. Dahmer gained notoriety due to the heinous nature of his crimes. Yet, even on the case of Dahmer, while Dahmer lured his victims with gay overtures, would Dahmer's case warrant more coverage because of the homosexual component in the story? No. Murder is murder and just because a victim is gay, straight, male, female or killed for his skin color does not make one of those victims more important than the others. Nor, should one victim's race, religion, or sexual orientation make that person's murder more newsworthy.Forget about the media. They're out for ratings, and they don't care about the Matthew Shepard's in this world unless the crime is particularly brutal. The concern should be that if a person murders another, that the murderer should be subject to the steepest and harshest penalties allowed by law. Murder is ugly, hateful and all victims should be put to rest with the knowledge that their killer will be brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and if convicted, put away or executed for their crime. The public wants to be titillated by the sensational details of a homicide and if a component of a particular brutal murder happens to be a gay component, then the public will be made aware through the tabloid-like reporting of the national media.
