Not all atheists are like you. For them, it's get what you can, kill if necessary, just don't get caught. Equality? Bulls**t. Tolerance? What for? When there are no eternal/moral consequences, why not? How would you like to live amongst people like that? I'd rather live amongst good Christians than atheists any day.
And thank you for pointing out the disease-state the Nobel Prizes have suffered under for the last decade or so, what with "Peace" prizes to Jimmy Carter and Arafish! Wow! Finally, innovation often depends on access to financing. After the conquest of Byzantine, the Islamic empires had a stranglehold on all trade between East and West. The wealth from their trade monopoly bankrolled many expensive projects. The many innovations of Asia were imported to the Middle East and labeled as "Islamic". It is significant, that after Muslim clerics decreed that all things western should be shunned, which included the science of the Greeks, that Islamic science and innovation went into a serious decline. There was little non-western scientific knowledge that was recognized as being solely Islamic. The rejection proved to be catastrophic for the future of the Middle East.
