theregister.co.uk — Verisign yesterday announced in a press release that it will raise its registry fees for .com and/or .net domain names by seven per cent to $6.42 on October 15, 2007, as provided for in a controversial contract inked last March between the company and ICANN.

The best thing that could possibly happen to .com domain names is having the price raised to $100/year. Think about it... that would instantly stop 99% of domain name squatting, but still be in the easily affordable range for any legitimate company, organization, or individual who just wanted their own domain. It's practically impossible to find a decent domain name these days that isn't being squatted on.

Didn't it used to cost $50 for a domain for a year? ...or was it $100? This was back when InterNIC first started charging. I forget what I was paying when I registered my first one...but that was 10 years ago now!

And queue the fake snail mails titled "Your domain is about to expire....renew now" from Verisign.... the schmegheads.
