(Over-generalizing) According to a Vmware support person with whom I spoke, this [new] version has improved 64bit support. This is a successor to VMware GSX 3.x.The likely reason for this release [that is, making it free] is to compete with both Microsoft's VirtualServer and Xen. The free nature of this product may prove to decelerate the movement of Xen. Plus, it provides an even easier gateway product to their big daddy, ESX.
"Use the serial number(s) provided below to install and run multiple copies of VMware Server during the beta period:"Is it free only for the beta period?
"If the Server version stops working on that date I will just return to my hacky-cracky version of the Workstation, or else find the latest copy of server circulating the intarweb." --teh_toasterSo, you use Workstation but don't pay for it. You suck. If you're aren't willing to pay for VMWare's product, use QEMU or Bochs.
I recently downloaded VMWare Server and checked the Help About section and it says "No Expiration" for the expiration date so I believe they have recently changed the status of the "beta" licence so that it really is free, not time limited.
