Meh. Some added categories and visualizations. Nothing to see here, move along.I'm not very impressed Kevin. You hyped this up like it was the be-all end-all of news websites. The visualizations are pretty and nice to look at, but nothing revolutionary. More categories are just going to bring more ignorant users to digg. When someone comments on a story, it is pretty much a sure thing that they at least know more about technology than the average person. With people joining who have interests like "celebrity gossip", story and comment quality will go down across the board. I will miss the days of Digg being solely a "technology news site". Although there is an option to view only tech stories, it will never be the same. The knowledge of the users about a certain topic and the common interest shared is what is important. Adding more interests to the pool will make it harder to identify with others.Kevin, I wish you wouldn't have let money cloud your head when you decided on this.
It will be impossible for Diggnation to cover the top stories of all categories. There will probably be an increase in number of stories submitted and number of users, which will make it very hard to summarize anything in a weekly podcast (it already is), and with categories in such broad subjects, it will basically become "The Weekly Article in the Category of..." - not very informative. Unless they're planning a daily 30 minutes podcast (interesting, but not doable, and not much different than any daily news podcast) it's safe to assume Diggnation will remain technology oriented. That's why I think the attempt to attract users with no interest in technology what-so-ever is pointless, because the whole Digg community in built around Diggnation and the Kevin/Alex worship. Without it, what is to separate us from del.ici.ous?
Diggnation bores me to tears and Kevin Rose is no god, he just had a really good idea with this site. I like the news and the constant updating of the site, as it helps me keep up to date. I watched last weeks episode of diggnation and they were really just reviewing stories I had already seen and really presented no original viewpoints that would further my understanding of the stories. Thus I think that, if you are on digg much, you have little need for diggnation, so i think that it can stay tech related for those who like it, and digg will attract new users from all over simply for the sake of the functionality of this site.
Lokoluis15,That doesn't make any sense to me. A website like this is in many ways a community - you can't separate the users and say "these people will be the technology group, and these people will be... the other group". The other group will have no idea what the technology people are talking about, and the technology people will get upset whenever anybody demonstrates their ignorance (it's not like it's too hard to notice it now). It will either annoy everybody, or create completely separate communities for each category. That's fine, but there's nothing unique about it. The "Diggnation culture" will be lost, and that's just a little sad.GarySwager,Watching two guys get drunk and be silly (mainly Alex) is loads of fun.
That update pretty much sums it up. The only thing actually worth watching the video for is the data visualizations. Fastforward to about the last 1/4 of the video to see them.
