blog.ryeterrell.net — No group is better positioned to place the right kind of pressure on our representatives than Diggers. It's our destiny to start making a difference in the way things are run, and I propose we get the ball rolling.

Downsize DC has got hundreds of new members as a result of this posting and asked current members to digg it to keep momentum going. You are all right who say it will never pass--WITHOUT YOU. The people can and will force this on a reluctant Congress. I am not exactly the only voter who is fed up with reading about horrble antiConstitutional stuff that Congress never even read.Join Downsize DC!!

If they have to read what they are voting on it will at least slow down the damage they do.

The Read the Bills Act is a great idea. It would make Congress members more aware, more accountable, and more responsible. It would also make the text of legislation available to non-Congress members (citizens, voters, anyone interested) so that pros and cons could be known before the vote, rather than after. Knowing the cons after often leads to many unpleasant consequences, like civil rights abuses that are suddenly legal.

is the average voter (congressman) of reading age?

This is an essential Act which would help to restore the Republic. Support the Act and support DownsizeDC.org.

"Open government" is supposed to be the rule, not the exception. Electronic recording of legislative votes in both State and federal government is available and should be required. Likewise, despite the furor over the O.J. Simpson criminal trial re cameras in the courtroom, every courtroom in our nation should be required, absent a strong reason, to have cameras. Notice footage from the Clarence Darrow/William Jennings Brian "Monkey Scopes" trial, with onlookers hanging from the balconies and windows of the courtroom. We now have video technology that can make those proceedings available to thousands of citizens, some times via closed circuit to local TV stations--"open court." How better to be informed of the workings of the judicial system. On this score, Sen. Arlen Spector sees the need, but is only advocating cameras in the U.S. Supreme Court; it's a good first step.

The popularity of this shows it can be done, since politicians respond to polls. This is too important not to keep putting pressure on Congress. Downsize DC is a great way to do this.

I'd like to hear how many people actually wrote or called their reps after reading this. People tend to be very verbal on their views and then lack action. I would think (hope) that the Digg crowd is prone to a little more action. The guy who runs DownsizeDC.org said that they got 400 more new subscribers than usual on the day this hit Digg; that's one good bit of action.So...how many of you saw this, agreed with it, and failed to act? How about doing it now?

The government is the problem. People bitch at oil companies, but they go out and drill, transport and refine oil into gas and deliver to your local gas station. All they get is a dangerous job and complaints from "congressmen", liberal idiots, etc.The good old government in most states adds on a 50 tax with a stroke of the pen, lifting maybe three fingers. Anything we can do to slow down the government and stop them from making more laws and raising taxes is a good thing.

We should be able to vote on each law before it is passed, this would be easy to do thanks to the internet. They should need over 75 percent of the vote to make a new law and 25 percent to get rid of an old law.

There is no incentive for a government employee to do a good job. The private sector fires people for doing a bad job and rewards people for doing a good job. The government fires people for doing a good job and rewards people for corruption and incompetence.

We should use the same tactic to end the "war on drugs" and war in Iraq.
