downloadsquad.com — Asus has begun shipping the Eee PC, a $399 ultra-light laptop that could give both the OLPC and major laptop makers a run for their money. The Eee PC runs a custom version of Xandros Linux. The interface almost looks more like a PDA UI than a computer.

That's actually an amusing theory. I'm going to assume that you're right.

I am thinking about getting one of these. I brought my Dell M90 (10lbs) to Iraq and I am sick of lugging it around from place to place. I have an external 750gb drive for my movies. works for me.

Okay, what;s the point of buying a tiny PC and then lumbering it with an external drive? What you actually want is a notebook. I may as well say oh this and an external drive and DVD Rom and 22" widescreen monitor and full size keyboard and a wheelbarrow to carry it around in is my dream laptop.

...or here's a blurry video of a guy a: running Xandros with a Vista theme or b: running a video of someone using Vista on the Eee's video player.

Hmm...neat concept, but I'm on the fence. The price is nice, but for about $1000 (check the deals/bargain alerts sites), you can get a Lenovo Thinkpad X61s, which has much longer battery life, much more comfortable keyboard, bigger screen (by 5"), much more harddrive space (though no SSD option...yet), and much better hardware overall...with only a .7 lb weight penalty. Far less compromise for pretty similar portability. Price is less of a concern for me. If the Eee PC gets 16 GB or 32 GB SSD options and a bigger screen (10"), while staying under $600, then I'll start to get interested.
