I have a prepaid phone I pay about $20 every three months. Unlimited data too with tethering! Too bad it maxes out at around 1KBs on the good days. :/

Check the EU chatter on gizmodo.com about how crappy, in general, American wireless service is. New technology -- Femtocells and a 450Mhz spectrum are not worth the costs to AT&T because we'll pay regardless of exorbitant fees and horrible customer service. One guy in GB says he pays £20 ($31) month for limited minutes and text and unlimited data.
