ccollomb.free.fr — This app unlocks in-use files, allowing functions to be performed on theme. It adds a simple context menu (right-click) entry that allows for quick and easy "unlocking" of files. No more rebooting to delete files that are in use.

SWEET! I don't have any reason to "keep" it installed but this will be great to have handy when I need it.

There is a reason files are locked by the OS. I suggest not fooling around with unlocking unless you know that the program that caused the file to be locked is not performing writes on it (read: Windows Media Player, which has locked files for me before). However, you should never have to reboot to unlock a file. If it's a broken DivX file, that's explorer's fault, and if you kill explorer.exe, it will unlock the file.

Ya, an easy way to do it is to kill explorer, a little how to:Run -> CMD Dir to location of file you wish to deleteCtrl+Alt+Delete -> End "Explorer.exe"In the command prompt (CMD) use the "del" command to delete the file you don't want.In Ctrl+Alt+Delete -> go toFile -> New Task -> open "explorer.exe"

There are some (well, let's be honest, many) viruses that Norton can't get rid of (thank gawd I stopped using that program), and the files themselves are locked. I used to have to reboot in safe mode to delete them. This would've been useful (but switching to Sophos AV gets rid of viruses just fine). Well, now I won't have to worry about Windows Media Player deciding to lock stuff for no reason.

This is useful for saving music videos from iTunes. iTunes makes a locked temp file in the temp directory while the video is playing. Copy it and rename to .qt and you can play it whenever you like.

I feel like a dumbass, I tried to click the ok button on that Error Deleting File or Folder image out of habit.

There is a more polite way to end explorer, in windows XP anyway. Click on Start -> shutdown and when the prompt comes up for restart or shutdown, hold down ctrl, alt, and shift while clicking on the cancel button and explorer will just go away. Then you can ctrl-alt-del to get task manager to run proggies from there... handy for killing explorer hooked spyware/viruses..
