arstechnica.com — In response to concerns that the decreasing number of computer science students is making the United States less competitive in the field of technology, universities are making their computer science curriculum more engaging and immersive.

"Such a program exists in every community college there is."Tell that to businesses who look for a Bachelor's to even let you in the door. Spend 30 minutes on any job search web site and look how many NetAdmin, SysAdmin, and programmer jobs have a 4 year degree requirement. Truth is, there's a gap in degree programs for IT people. We're forced into MIS which spends way too much time on things like marketing, finance, and such or CS which is nothing more than a Math degree...

Qenton: A good database system? A good compiler/interpreter? A good video codec? A good driver? A good operating system patch? I mean, don't get me wrong, a commercial quality video game will have some interesting code in it, but it's not preparation for *everything*.

CS is in decline because American students know that no matter what they do, their job will eventually be given away to someone in Asia or Eastern Europe by their greedy CEO.

another UTCS alumn hereI was one of those who applied to CS because I want to create the next Quake or become the next great cg animator. Well, I was in a for a surprise when UT offered none of the above options. In fact, for the most part of my UTCS life, I hated CS, and I thought I am wasting my time and money. But, to be honest, I signed up for CS for all the wrong reasons. However, after a little soul searching, I finally understood what CS really is, and I eventually ventured into A.I. When I had an interest, goal, and motivation, I begin to enjoy and appreciate what UTCS had to offer.

Gee... I wonder why there are less Comp Sci students in colleges and universities. Perhaps it is the outsourcing of jobs to India, China, and Russia - that might have something to do with it. The Western world is being sold out to cheaper alternatives in the Eastern world.

The assumption is always that most people get into CS because they see it is a steady well paid career. The fact that they jumped over to business and art proves that their hearts weren't in it to begin with. It is better for any industry that carpetbaggers be kept out.

you have private schools to thank for out of control tuition.if you're paying $36k per year on a public law school as an instate resident, I'd be shocked. OTOH, if you're paying for a private, I'm sure your wife thinks there's a cost benefit analysis of paying more up front for private schooling, but getting a larger salary once she starts practicing.

Why go into a field that is being taken over by people living in virtual slavery? This is just the tip of the iceberg in how these insane trade agreements are going to destroy the US economy.

@mojaamDon't listen to those who would say that IS or MIS degrees are a joke. Every place I have worked has required some business skills. In fact, if you really want to get ahead in the industry, being able to handle the bottom line is as important as the technology side of things.
