abcnews.go.com — While experts say the so-called "Freshman 15" is usually only 5 to 7 pounds, it's a common experience for many college newcomers faced with unlimited cafeteria food, late-night pizza binges and snacking that comes with irregular student schedules.

Self catered accomodation FTW. Cheaper by far, plus cooking is fun!

It's all about the food at the cafeteria. At Indiana U., I did fine my first two years. I switched to Purdue my third year and fattened up. The bulk of the food there was all starch. You'd eat like a pig and be hungry again two hours later.

From the article: "The problem isn't always weight gain: Some new students lose weight because they're no longer getting three meals a day from Mom and Dad."This is my problem, actually. While I didn't get three meals a day from "Mom and Dad," I was used to preparing 4-6 smaller, healthier meals per day in conjunction with rigorous weight training. Due to my body type, this is actually the only way I've been able to gain weight in a healthy manner (mostly muscle). The switch to two meals a day means a day is quite difficult for someone of my background. Acquiring healthy food for the dorm is considerably difficult. Protein powder can help somewhat.

Have you been to a residence cafateria lately?I'll tell you its not a pretty sight. Ours is pretty much brand new and the food is still garbage. Also pizza is the only hot food served all the time (from lunch till closing), and its not even good pizza. But we do have frozen yogurt instead of ice cream, bonus.

West End is awesome. D2 is a place I try to avoid... Even if I go in starved, I lose my appetite pretty much after one plate.
