nytimes.com — Taking a step that professors may view as a bit counterproductive, some universities are doling out Apple iPhones and Internet-capable iPods to students. While schools emphasize its usefulness ? online research in class and instant polling of students, for example ? a big part of the attraction is, undoubtedly, that the iPhone is cool and a hit.

It doesn't matter where here is. I made a reference to a location and specified that ATT had a low usage rate. f**k off.

That's a nice perk, especially considering how expensive education is these days.

I love my iphone, but this really comes across as a marketing gimmick, and not something that contributes to learning. What I'd really like to see are Kindles distributed to new students, combined with a partnership that allows universities to have ad hoc distributions of cleared copyrighted material (i.e. allow simple distributions of course packets via Kindles).
