Every Airline breaks guitars. I looked out the window last time to see my skis getting chucked into the plane and around the runway. Good times. Skis are a little more durable but everyone knows that if you can you take your guitar as a carry-on or mark it as fragile. A $3500 guitar especially. It would be inefficient if luggage wasn't moved as quickly as possible and every guitar case / ski bag / piece of luggage was treated like it was $3500. Plus you may just end up having it stolen... You don't see anyone putting a lap top under the plane, do you?Fly smart. United is being a dumb ass for this but the guy is to blame as well.
In more than twenty years of air travel I never had a missing item or a damaged luggage. I always flew with quality luggage and made sure fragile items were well packed. I know how things work on a ramp and I never worry about it. I worry more about the treatment I'm about to receive at customs and security screening than the one my luggage will receive from the handling crews. Next time show a bit more respect to the people making your travel possible, starting with the people at the check-in. Seriously, if ground handlers are crooks and f**kups, I can't imagine what TSA people are.
Right right, the magic "Fragile" sticker which makes the crew treat your possessions with the utmost respect and decency, I will have to remember that next time I travel.
Who doesn't know that baggage handlers treat your items with indifference at best... distain at worst? Put it in a case designed to thwart their roughness. I can't imagine trusting them. That just seems silly.Luggage commercials involving gorillas from when I was a tiny kid pop into mind...
Dude tons of people fly United for personal stuff. If 4 people choose to fly on something else because of this story United will have lost more money than the guitar is worth.
It's pretty common, unfortunately. A friend of mine had her favourite guitar get smashed by Air North when she went to play a music festival in the Northwest Territories. Luckily, she was able to get it repaired (out of her own pocket, of course).
This is the power of Word of Mouth Media in action guys!! It shows the true power of the people, even against powerful, established brands. Or should I say especially against powerful, established brands.
As an employee of a competitor airline of United I can tell you this while I feel sympathetic for this guy and I know this is completely honest, I still want to tell him and all the rest of the world of travelers out there. "Don't check your valuables, laptops, medication, car/house keys and GUITARS. Always carry them on. According to the contract of carriage an airline is not responsible for certain items such as laptops but in the defense of this band they should have gotten the person that also witnessed the guitar being thrown to make a written statement and instead of going to the airline in full they should have filled a damage claim then gone to the local police to file a report and then contacted their lawyers.

As Spargonaut said, you should first learn music. Country sounds like that. You can't hate that, but is how it goes.

On SouthWest you can see the friendly skies through a football-sized hole in the roof :)

But United must know that rogue baggage handlers chuck bags, hence the policy. Frequent travellers know what happens to bags sooner or later.
