canada.com — Last week's introduction of new federal copyright legislation ignited a firestorm with thousands of Canadians expressing genuine shock at provisions that some MPs argued would create a "police state." As opposition to the copyright bill mounts, the most commonly asked question is "Why"?

> Our Government is the first to specifically allow Canadians to record their TV and radio shows to > enjoy at different times—without infringing copyright. We always had those rights, and even these "leftover rights" are largely an illusion thanks to the digital locks provision. They just have to turn on a simply broadcast flag and our rights vanish like a desert mirage. And why wouldn't they turn it on all the time? These are the jokers who tried to outlaw the VCR in the first place.> Our reform will also permit consumers to copy music onto devices such as MP3 players, > i-Pods and DVDs and copy books, newspapers, videos and photos into different formats.Except for the digital locks provision again. (DRM trumps what is left of our rights)> Last but certainly not least, our bill limits at $500 the amount of statutory damages that > individuals may be liable to pay if they infringed copyright for private use, provided the material is > not protected by a digital lock.So if you back up or bypass anything with even the weakest DRM on it for your own use, $20,000 please. That includes playing foreign DVDs with region codes (bypasses DRM preventing you from doing this) Unlocking your own cell phone for use with another carrier, (you are supposed to dump it in the landfill and buy another) or using your Wii to run any non-Nintendo approved software, such as fan written games.> Exceptions for some educational and research purposes to promote innovation and enrich the > educational experience;Your teachers can only keep the material around briefly - they can't keep it year after year to use in next years lesson. > Clarity for Internet service providers on their roles and responsibilities in relation to copyright,That means your ISP is required to spy on you. Welcome to North Korea....

This all started with conservatives (literally equivalent to republicans at least on the governing side). Liberals never accepted something they didn't want for Canada. Stephen Harper just f$^$ed himself. Pushing that bill through is political suicide for him and his party, if the blunders and U.S. puppeteer position he assumed before weren't. This law has been pushed on Canada many times before, but never as sneaky as this time. First of all, it got almost voted in before people became aware, then we have people coming on TV, telling us this is only going to change how my MP3 player gets added into an updated copyright law. Where the &$&k is the transparency, its starting to feel strangely like the U.S.. People need to write their MP's and organize protests in front of Parliament Hill, like previous times. We need to show them how strong we feel about our liberties, and how we don't want the M$AA to come here and start blackmailing people to settle before trial for downloading 3 songs and sharing them. We can't allow lobbyists to "privatize" our government U.S style. So F$&k these "tea-bagger" conservatives, F$&k Steven Harper for being a weak as$ U.S. puppet that takes it up the A$$ from lobbyists, and most of all F$%k you corrupted U.S. government for bringing us these headaches with ur corrupt companies trying to milk people for cash that never reaches the artists anyway.P.S.: Luckily, there are alternatives that were prepared for a day like this. for 5 bux a month you can buy access to a completely anonymous VPN in another country that barely slows down ur speeds at all. So this bill will solve nothing anyway, just another scare tactic
