As an owner of a 12 inch ibook G4 i can attest to that. The lines on the macbook are much more refined, even to the I/O ports along the side being flush with the case. Im pretty sure the macbook is lighter too, at least it feels that way.

So for 7 years you are screwed? or maybe you want to carry an external drive around with you everywhere as well as your "ultra-portable" 13" laptop, which i consider an oxymoron. Not to mention the at least $150 that apple will charge us for that external drive, its not yet time to drop the optical drive.

yes you dont need it - whats the point of an 'ultra portable' if you are going to carry round a bag full of cds - what are you doing? installing from CD on a train?
