If all you play are games build to be used on Windows, why would you expect them to work perfectly on Linux? This argument does not make any sense. Linux is not a knock-off of Windows so if Wine doesn't help you play windows games on Linux, perhaps you should be asking the game developers why they don't create versions for Linux. It really is up to them to do the developing for various operating systems. The only Windows game I play, happens to work just as well using Wine - so I'm lucky. But for hardcore gamers such as yourself, you are pretty much tied to Windows aren't you?

Thank you for providing some useful data to provide me with perspective. I'll admit that no trend reversal is appearing yet, and I agree that, from a pro-PC perspective, it will at least "get worse before it gets better." (As an aside, I'm curious as to whether those figures include subscription fees for either consoles or MMO's.) However I'm not really shaken in my belief that the trend will eventually reverse, and something you said reiterates the key:"The advantage of consoles is that they are found in the living room, not the desktop."I know I buried that point in a discussion of overall convergence, but it is that overall convergence (of various media and IT resources) that gives me confidence in my prediction. That convergence is what will give rise to the HTPC which today is still constrained by proprietary data channels (like the recently solved difficulty getting CableCard into a PC, for example) and technology that is inaccessible and doesn't yet have a mature market for prepackaged solutions. It is when the average household /does/ have a computer in the living room that consoles will start being seen as redundant. If I'm wrong about HTPC's eventually taking hold, then my prediction would likely fail.I think it's a bit disingenuous (probably not intentionally) to refer to casual games as "minesweeper and bejeweled." Flash gaming is on a huge uptake not only because it satisfies a more transient need for interactive entertainment, but also because what were once more advanced mainstream games are now the stuff of casual flash gaming. Yesterday's Final Fantasy X gets delivered today as a flash game, with the same depth and breadth of content. Flash is also seemingly the last refuge of good old-fashioned arcade gaming which I believe is a form of entertainment that, when properly modernized, never grows old.I don't contend that flash games (or their ad revenue) count as part of the disputed "PC gaming" for this conversation, but I do contend that WoW is most definitely not the only MMORPG enjoying wide success. WoW is like Microsoft for OS's: it has a level of market penetration that grants it celebrity status...but that doesn't really make Apple any less successful. Some other big successes would be Guild Wars (and the highly anticipated Guild Wars 2 has a salivating audience waiting for it), Runescape, Lineage, EVE Online, and apparently a bunch I've never heard of: http://gigaom.com/2007/06/13/top-ten-most-popular- ...In truth, I am a bit pro-PC. For all the titles released, it's still very hard to find console games for a mature audience (as in intelligence/depth of content, not gratuitous gore), whereas that seems to be the core market on the PC. That negligence from console gamers (understandable, their primary audience is teens, and they're also the easiest to satisfy with formulaic title-grinding) ensures PC gaming won't die before it can return.Anyway, I wish you all the best of luck. I once had a very passionate interest in becoming a game developer, but picked up what I saw as signs that the industry was collectively headed to a very dark place where creativity and originality can no longer flourish (in general), which tempers my reason for that interest in the first place. I believe the insurgence of flash gaming is a symptom of the talent and creativity that has had to find other paths of expression--similar to the amazing shows and music that are coming out in forms that bypass h**lywood and the big record labels. But unlike indie music and television, indie gaming is much more limited in what it can accomplish, especially in the current landscape. As a consequence, the success stories are fewer and smaller than the counterparts in other industries. For myself, I've applied my talent toward participation in other technology sectors, and in retrospect I think I made the right choice.

Microsoft and Apple are two companies with a broad range of products. Some suck, some don't. I'll bury accordingly, especially if the content is poor.Ubuntu is one distribution of linux that makes the front page every time the splash screen is changed, the background is changed, there is a new theme, or the name of the next distro is announced.

PLEASE for the love of god. Stop with the lame naming. And the lame version numbering (ie "9.04" should be "9")...it was cute in 2005, it's now just annoying and gay.

i understand the logic of it. i don't think it's necessary. Thanks for that explanation tho, Cap't Obvious. My point is...2 releases a year.....and April 29, is almost May 1...so why not 9.049 lol. 2 releases, 9 and 9.2, 9.1, 9.5? anyways...ubuntu 9 is what i call it, screw any fanboy who has a problem with that. It's not cute, and the month it's released in is TOTALLY irrelevant.

So you're complaining that they release in April and October, so they use 9.04 and 9.10, and you're complaining that they don't call it 9 and 9.2 instead. So you're complaining for the sake of complaining. You're an astroturfer.
