zdnet.com.au — Ubuntu is finalising preparations for the release of the next version -- dubbed Feisty Fawn -- of its popular Linux distribution in mid-April. Overnight, Ubuntu developer Tollef Fog Heen announced Ubuntu's main software repository had been frozen -- with no changes allowed to the code -- as the project prepared to release the fifth test version.

Are they gonna support WPA this time around?Any interest in using it ends pretty damn quick when you can't even get a connection through standard methods that have been out for years now.

Hmm.... from my understanding the Atheros chipset is pretty well covered by Ubuntu natively. I have a Dlink G-520 and I had to do was just configure my wireless card, and I am wireless. But then again you have the Macbook so you probably would know before I would about support for them.

That is because Feisty is still in testing. I am still a bit of a noob so I am not switching till they say it is completely stable and it gets released.

Does fake raid (dmraid), like nforce4 mobos have, work out of a box? This is important if you want to dual boot Windows XP with Ubuntu on RAID configuration.

Please don't use dmraid. It's junk. Any onboard raid is junk. It's not worth the hassle.Use mdraid. You'll thank me. (Yes, mdraid is supported in the install.)

^Yes, use the community. It's actually one of my favorite parts about using Ubuntu. If I have problems, I can hop onto the forums or the IRC channel and a crowd of knowledgable people who can speak English help me out.

Fantastic! In about 10 or so more revisions ubuntu should finally be comparable to Windows or Mac!Linux rocks!

Since there is a single driver for Nvidia video, it should work. I have a 7600 that works flawlessly with a wide aspect monitor. I have not tried the 8800, though.

My Broadcom card worked out of the box - for the first time EVER in ANY distribution. That was a complete surprise.

For Broadcom 43xx cards, you could also try bcm43xx-fwcutter
