XGL/Compiz will never be standard in Ubuntu as it tends to require high end hardware, and we want this to be able to run on machines with low end graphics hardware, so the devs will likely stick with metacity as the default WM in gnome. XGL/Compiz however will be in the repos from now on.Incidentally, we have the very latest nvidia and ATI drivers in dapper, and the nvidia ones install faultlessly. There are still bugs in the ATI drivers however, and it seems that ATI motherboards sometimes fail install all together. Here in the heart of the community, we tend to advise people that a flawless Out Of the Box system can only be achieved with nvidia hardware- My system for example is all AMD and nvidia throughout, and the graphics are flawless, and it all Just Works.
that's strange, I tried the live Cd of it and worked incredibly fast. I have a 1.8 GHz P4 and a 64 Mb GeForce 4 440 Go and saw no lag whatsoever. I would assume that the actual install would run faster than a live cd.
You obviously don't understand XGL then, as its main function is to have the desktop drawn by the GPU, specifically onboard video cards such as the lowly Intels. And that should cover everyone, even "the poor."
In an OS eat OS world, nothing survives that isn't strong :rollz:And yeah. Yay for more Ubuntu. I ordered some of the distro CDs and have been giving them out on the street, at my work, and at DDR. People love free stuff, and some of them may actually try it. Public outreach FTW!
Not going to happen. We're passed Feature Freeze. You can set it up easily enough yourself though. Dapper+1 will likely be built around Xgl though, as a, quote "bring on the bling" release.
This is actually an attitude that's been troubling me. Dapper is intended to be Ubuntu's first server release. It's going to be officially supported for 5 years, rather than 18 months. I'd rather see effort being put into core technologies like selinux and Xen virtualization, than making things pretty.(yes I'm looking at moving production servers from debian to ubuntu, and yes I'm very impressed with how much more responsive xgl makes a desktop feel. I'm not knocking pretty, just concerned that flashy shouldn't pull manpower from useful.

ATI works just as well. Buy one and find out. ATI Drivers are extremely easy to install.

They may change the versioning to 6-06 to avoid confusion... Apparently some people don't understand that there is no 6.00, 6.01, 6.02, etc.
