In all honesty, I wish I was on Ubuntu right now. Unfortunately after mucking around for ages trying to get my ATI card to work and flash going properly in firefox, I gave up.I found that the transition, despite what people claim, was not "easy" and was actually a pain in the ass. Will there ever be a release with little things like this smoothed out?
Unfortunately, both of your problems (ATI and Flash) stem from poor Linux support from the companies that make those products, AMD and Adobe. Flash seems to be better with the release of Flash 9 (yay ALSA sound!), but I have no idea if ATI drivers will ever get their act together.
The font kerning/aliasing still looks godawful, I know there are licensing issues etc but the default font is horrible to look at. Sadly Tahoma or Calibri are much cleaner, and hasn't anyone found anything to compare to cleartext or the mac anti aliasing system. I'm not the only person I know who's sick of sub pixel smoothing that adds horrible green and red hints to black text. The monochrome sub pixel stuff in ubuntu is also terrible.Aaanyway, I think this should be made a bit of a priority as its the first thing you notice when it starts up..
If there will be some compositing on by default, I am sure they will make it so that it doesn't break the whole X server on older systems.Support for accelerated graphics can be autodetected.
"To another already existing theme perhaps but to change the colors of specific elements?"You have a point, but it isn't very hard to just change the theme file. It would be nice if someone made Metacity better to support easy color changes.

Most people will be fine with Beryl or Compiz on by default as long as there's a "safemode" in the boot menu.
